Animal Teeth The Good Will Social Club, Big Fun Festival, Winnipeg MB, January 29
Published Jan 30, 2015When you start your set with a cover of one of Winnipeg's tragically underrated bands from the '90s, you are setting the expectations for the night extremely high. Joined on stage by Royal Canoe's Bucky Drieger for a well executed cover of Transistor's "Coffee Song," complete with a rousing feedback solo by Drieger, Winnipeg's Animal Teeth showed their best cards too early in the night.
Moving between a few covers and their own indie rock material, the group did their best to channel some of the local bands that came before them. With a solid rhythm section, simple melodies and some hooks buried deep, Animal Teeth have the potential to move away from the inside joke-heavy approach they seem to embrace at times. While it's obvious they are having fun on stage, a few more focused original songs during the night would have made this even more enjoyable.
