A Winged Victory for the Sullen Return with 'Invisible Cities' Score
Hear "Desires Are Already Memories" from the upcoming effort from the Stars of the Lid offshoot
Published Dec 01, 2020Beloved Stars of the Lid offshoot A Winged Victory for the Sullen are returning with a new album, which this time around will be a soundtrack effort. The record is called Invisible Cities, and it features the score for the critically acclaimed theatre production directed by Leo Warner.
The score by the duo of Adam Wiltzie and Dustin O'Halloran will be released on February 26 via the pair's own Artificial Pinearch Manufacturing label, in association with Ninja Tune. Right now, though, you can listen to the score's "Desires Are Already Memories" down below.
A Winged Victory for the Sullen were commissioned to create the music for Warner's 90-minute multimedia stage show, which was loosely inspired by Italo Calvino's 1972 novel invisible Cities.
"Four months is not a lot of time to create 90 minutes of music for a production using classical theatre, dance and high res video mapping on a stage the size of two football pitches," Wiltzie explained in a statement. "It was a pleasure to work with 59 Productions, unlike other producers, they left the micro-managing at home, and let us get on with it. Early on in discussions with director Leo Warner it was realized that the human voice would take a central role in the score as it was essentially the only instrument we could see evolving over 600 years with a storyline that would not have the listener screaming 'its Zimmertime.'"
The results are described as "45 minutes of breathtaking beauty," which you can get a taste of via the newly shared "Desires Are Already Memories."
A Winged Victory for the Sullen's most recent album was 2019's The Undivided Five.
