Alessia Cara's New Album Has a Song Inspired by Jim Carrey
"I think he's one of the smartest people, especially among actors and public figures out there"
Published Jun 15, 2018After teasing fans with the lyrics to her latest single, Alessia Cara returned with new song "Growing Pains" today. It's the start of the rollout to the 21-year-old singer's sophomore album, and while much of the record deals with growing up and taking responsibility in her personal and professional life, it also took inspiration from some unexpected sources — like Jim Carrey.
Speaking to Exclaim!, Cara said her upcoming LP features a song that was "directly influenced" by the Canadian actor.
"There's one song in particular that I wrote after watching a Jim Carrey interview, which is really weird," she said. "But the things that he was saying were so weird and amazingly smart and philosophical that I wrote a song about it."
Cara encountered Carrey's take on life while watching Netflix documentary Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, which delves into the method behind Carrey's portrayal of Andy Kaufman in the 1999 film Man on the Moon.
"Remember when he played Andy Kaufman in that movie?" she asks. "There's a movie on Netflix where they document the behind-the-scenes of that movie, and he does interviews throughout that whole documentary."
She added, "Just watching that interview where he talks about life and humans — you have to watch it. I think he's one of the smartest people, especially among actors and public figures out there. I know that's subjective, but I think he's extremely smart. So I just got inspired by what he was saying."
Cara wouldn't reveal the name of the song just yet ("I'm gonna keep that private. I accidentally said the name of a song yesterday. I'm gonna give away the whole tracklist!"), but promises that "you'll hear that soon."
While we wait for full album details and the first listen to the Carrey-inspired track, revisit lead single "Growing Pains" here.
