This year's Best Original Song nominees each performed during last night's ceremony, and Billie Eilish's special performance turned out to be a Beatles cover for the In Memoriam reel.
But Eminem's performance remains without any particular context. Sure, he won the award for Best Original Song for "Lose Yourself" from 8 Mile in 2003, but he didn't even bother showing up to the event then. And it's not like it's a particularly significant milestone when it comes to celebrating artistic anniversaries.
Nevertheless, following a random montage of famous songs from films, the screen lifted and Eminem performed. He later apologized via Twitter for missing the ceremony 18 years ago.
Everyone in the crowd seemed to love it once the shock wore off, but Twitter still had questions.

So Kevin Hart was pulled from hosting the #Oscars for a homophobic joke he made a decade ago, as a comedian. Yet Eminem was asked to perform despite a back catalogue filled with homophobic slurs? Make your mind up. 🤦♂️— Kieran Doody (@kierandoody) February 10, 2020
